USC Football: Ex-NFL Offensive Coordinator, Jim Hostler To Join Defensive Coaching Staff
Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

According to football insider, Bruce Feldman, USC football is expected to hire Jim Hostler as an analyst working with the Trojans defensive staff under new defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn. The Trojans have made great strides toward fixing what was a terrible 2023 defense on both the player and coaching side of the equation. Hostler joins several new coaches on the defensive staff including another NFL veteran Eric Henderson.

USC Football To Hire Jim Hostler

The 57-year-old Pittsburgh, PA native has been a coach since 1990, getting his start in the NFL in 2000 as a quality control coach for the Kansas City Chiefs working under offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye. After a one-year stint, Hostler started moving up the coaching ladder at several stops around the league including as offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers in 2007.

More recently, Hostler followed Ron Rivera from Carolina to Washington, then worked in 2023 as a senior offensive assistant with Ben Johnson at the Detroit Lions. He has also worked for Herm Edwards, Mike McCarthy, John Harbaugh, and Chuck Pagano.

In recent years it has become en vogue to hire offensive coaches to work directly with defenses and vice versa. Looking back, Hostler’s employers show his proclivity for working with defensive-minded head coaches.
